Now that the election is over, we hope you will spend a minute with Border Action Network…Thanksgiving is an opportunity to review our lives and express our gratitude for all we have. Border Action Network is grateful that President Obama signed the Deferred Action Executive order. It can potentially allow over a million young people a chance at meaningful employment and continuing education. Border Action Network is very proud of the young women and men in our community that are trying to file their DACA applications. There have been many workshops and volunteers working to insure their paper work is complete. The problem for many of these amazing young people now is paying for their applications. Many tell us they are struggling to raise the $465.00 needed. To many of them, it seems unobtainable. Some are in school, and many work low paying jobs to help their families, but they do what they can. Every week they have car washes, bake sales, yard sales… but they are still so far away from their goals. BAN wants to share with you the story of one young man, Josue Saldivar. We believe there are community members that will help Josue and others raise funds for their applications. Please read his story; please consider making a donation today.

Josue Saldivar – My Undocumented Story

Jose Saldivar, DREAMerMy name is Josue S. Saldivar and I’m from Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. I arrived in Tucson, Arizona in 1999 at the age eight. I arrived with my family: my dad, my mom, and my two younger sisters. I started school in the 3rd grade without knowing a single word of English. By 5th grade, I was taking all-English classes. I went on to middle school and then high school. All these years, I knew I was not born in the United States but I always thought that if I got good grades, was involved in extra-curricular activities and in my community I would be able to go to a university. This was not the case. I graduated high school as eight in my class with a 4.0 GPA, was the MVP of the Cross Country and Track team, member of the National Honor Society, Student Body Vice President of Student Council, and was a member and volunteer in many organizations.

A NEW Border Action Network
Latest News
Monday, October 22 2012 15:09
Border Action Network has been growing and changing over this last year. We have been examining our role in the ever-changing landscape of border and immigrant communities. How can we serve the community best?  What are the needs? What are BAN’s skills? After much soul searching and months of work under the leadership of our Executive Director, Juanita Molina, we are very pleased to introduce our new Border Action Network Mission and Vision statements:

“Border Action Network is a human rights organization in border and immigrant communities. Our mission is to promote safety, equality, dignity, understanding and justice within the human environment and across cultures regardless of race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or country of origin.”

Our Vision:

“A humane and civil society that values healthy, just and vibrant border and immigrant communities.”

The next step was to decide how we are best equipped to accomplish these objectives. We have looked at every word and have formed plans to achieve these goals. When people ask us what we do, we answer:

Latest News
Wednesday, October 03 2012 19:08

We’ve had some exciting staff changes at BAN in the past few months, here are the updates- we encourage you to connect with our new staff members with any of your needs or concerns.

After eight years of service to Border Action Network as a staff member and volunteer, Border Action Network has said goodbye to Organizing Coordinator Julissa Villa. We at Border Action thank her for all her contributions to BAN. We wish her the best of luck in all of her endeavors.

Alex GibiliscoBAN would like you to meet Alexander Gibilisco, our new Civic Engagement & Organizing Coordinator!

“Growing up in Guatemala, I never thought college would even be possible. When I moved to the U.S. as a child my life completely changed. Putting myself through school while balancing jobs and an internship wasn’t easy but the desire to help immigrants in the U.S. was my motivation to work as hard as I have. I was a first-generation college student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I have a Bachelors of Arts degree in International Studies & Political Science and a Minor in Spanish.

undocumented & unafraid

Alex Gibilisco, our Civic Engagement and Organizing Coordinator, and I attended the “Undocumented and Unafraid” Book Tour held on Friday afternoon, September 14, at the Most Holy Trinity Church in Tucson, Arizona. Attendees were welcomed by Josue Saldivar, himself an undocumented youth who came to the United States from Agua Prieta, Sonora in 1993. Josue started school in the U.S. in the third grade not speaking English. He became interested in social justice in high school when he realized that he did not qualify for federal financial aid to college. He is currently finishing community college and is a volunteer with Undocumented Youth In Action. Josue introduced the three panelists; moderator Kent Wong, Director, UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education, Fabiola Azuza and Sophia Campos.

The presentation was mostly the oral stories presented by two UCLA grads, Fabiola Azuza and Sophia Campos. Two books, “undocumented and unafraid: Tam Tran, Cinthya Felix, and the Immigrant Youth Movement” and “underground undergrads: UCLA Undocumented Immigrant Students Speak Out” were offered for sale after the presentations. “Underground Undergrads” was the first book in the country written by and about these young people. Since then, the immigrant youth movement has developed into a significant force nationally.  Both books are published by the UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education. Information about the books can be found at http://labor.ucla.edu/
