The Border—On the Edge of Hope 6th Annual Santa Cruz Valley Border Issues Fair and Concert Friday & Saturday, January 15-16, 2010
The Santa Cruz Valley Border Issues Concert and Fair, January 15 and 16, will be held at The Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 17750 S. La Cañada, Sahuarita. The concert on Friday, January 15, 7 p.m., will feature the Santa Cruz River Band and a number of their family and friends. A $10 donation is requested.
The Border Issues Fair, Saturday, January 16, begins with registration at 8 a.m., followed at 9 a.m. by a presentation by renowned Latin America and immigration scholar, Dr. David Carrasco, the Neil L. Rudenstine Professor of the Study of Latin America at Harvard Divinity School.
Workshops before and after lunch will include: immigration reform, legal issues and humanitarian aid; border community development; immigrant children in detention; border art and border music.
The final presentation will be a new play, “Border Rising,” by Liza Wolff, performed by nine students from the University of New Mexico. The play is based on the stories of five immigrant women who have made the torturous journey across the border. The play blends history, poetry, media and story to pass on the incredible stories of those immigrants who made the hard decision to take a journey into the desert, searching for something better.
A $15 donation will include lunch served by the women from the Casa de la Misericordia in Nogales. Participants are invited to bring a gallon of drinking water for those in the desert.
