1/31/2008 Group releases new report “scoring” the 2007 Arizona legislature on bills impacting immigrant families and border communities. Report release kicks off new campaign focused on state legislation Tucson, AZ - To kick-off a 6-month campaign focused on promoting what they term a “new vision” for border and immigration policy in Arizona, the Border Action Network released today a scorecard analyzing their state legislature’s 2007 votes and bills.
The report breaks down how legislators voted by districts and how they individually voted on ten different bills, including last year’s highly controversial employer sanctions law. Based on analysis of voting records, the group gave a “D” to the House of Representatives and an “F” to the Senate. Eleven Representatives and four Senators received an “A+” or “A” for supporting positive legislation and voting against what the group termed anti-human rights bills.
The group will release a similar report in July 2008 after monitoring the January to June Arizona legislative session. In March, the group will organize an “Advocacy Day” at the state legislature during which several hundred community members will meet with their state legislators to urge their support of policies that promote integration and equality, not scapegoating and fear. The group is also creating an alert system to encourage constituents to contact their legislators when bills are up for consideration.
The campaign is an effort to try to prevent bad bills from becoming law and having to deal with the consequences after the fact. By promoting their own recommendations and principles for policies that encourage community security, immigrant integration and the equal protection of rights for all Arizona residents, Border Action hopes to push the political pendulum back to a place of rational, decision-making that benefits the entire state.
